Audio Project

With this audio assignment, my main idea was create a product with my sister reading one of my nephew’s baby books, particularly Dr. Suess because he’s always been one of my favorite authors, along with adding some fun and silly sounds to it. The reason I chose to go this route is because I would love to raise awareness on how important it is for children to start reading at any age.

When I was little, I didn’t read as much as I should’ve. It is something that I regret because growing up my reading was never at the level it could’ve been. Even today, I’m still not where I should be when it comes to my reading level. When I started college at LCC, I was put into the Guided Studies program due to my reading scores. I truly believe that the Reading and Effective Learning classes helped me improve an enormous amount. I’m still not the best at reading or where I should be but I continue to improve everyday.

Now that I have a year old nephew, who I love and adore dearly, I read to him multiple times a day everyday. The best part about it is that he enjoys sitting down with me. When he wants to read, he loves picking out his own books and turning the pages himself. I enjoy reading with him because not only do I help educate him but it’s a great way to spend quality time with my nephew, which is completely one of the most important thing to me.

W-17 P4 Audio

When this audio project was first assigned I was kind of bummed to be honest, mostly because I hate the sound of my own voice. I was scrambling for ideas and I wanted to come up with a concept that was truly original. I new that I wanted to create something that was going to be comedy based, but I was not sure what style I wanted it to be. I started thinking, what would be a funny situational comedy sketch where the concept could be easily understood through audio? What type of voices or certain characters could be a good fit for this type of thing? I decided Macho Man Randy Savage would be my choice for main character. I remember thinking about all of his old wrestling promos and how well executed they were. This man was an absolute beast on the microphone and his slang and mannerisms were always over the top, and larger than life. So I had it. I had my main character, but what situation could I put him in that would come across as funny? I decided to go with him ordering at a drive thru, because it could be audibly understood what was going on, while keeping the dialogue minimal for the secondary character. I started to watch some of his old promotions, to brush up on some of his lingo. I wrote down a list of some of the favorite lines I heard him say and found a way to manipulate it into my own dialogue. I added a few sounds from http://www.freesound.org/ such as the car starting and the radio laying in the background to help illustrate the whole experience. It was a ton of fun to try and impersonate him, and I hope it does not come across as too cheesy. So without further ado here is Macho Man Randy Savage Orders At A Drive Thru.

Abstract Micro-Testimony

Credit to the amazing artist: Artur Szygulski as I borrowed this wonderful image from his work posted on Bēhance.

This Audio project reflects some thoughts that I wrote down one day after driving through slow traffic and observing a burst of wind gliding through a tree. In that moment time slowed almost to a stop for me, as I watched a flurry of crispy dead leaves cycle through the waving branches forming an intrinsic and swirling design, until it lightly kissed the side walk and continued on down as if they were alive and had another place to rush away to.

In that moment it hit me.. this was a symbol of my testimony of what God did for me. I was on my way to a dentist appointment, but when I pulled into the parking lot I had to write, I had to record this, because it was beautiful, because it was perfect. Because it was mine.

This marked one of the most powerful turning points of my entire life. It represents a day for me that I surrendered because I couldn’t do life my way any longer, I would have rather died.. but I was saved. I was delivered. I was made new.

Life is so precious.

Never give up!

Basilisks Evil Eye (Book AD)

With this project, I decided to do a radio book ad where it gives a brief synopsis of what the story is. The story is not real and was just a quick summary I made up on the spot. I honestly regret choosing the mythological creature, the basilisk. That word set me back quite a bit. I had a hard time saying it when I was recording for some reason. I did about 5 or 6 takes of just saying the word basilisk alone.

Note to self: Never say the word basilisk for a recording again. It’s more trouble than it’s worth. Next time, use yeti or dragon!

Overall, I am pretty happy with my project. I think the music suits the fantasy theme of the book ad. The sound effects I think stayed pretty true to the theme as well. Maybe the evil laugh was a little bit cheesy but to be fair, there was not very many evil laughs that didn’t sound a little corny. This was the best one I could find. I also think the writing isn’t too bad  for something I wrote on the spot. I think it goes along with the traditional cheesy fantasy quest plot.

As far as my voice, I’m not too happy with it. Audiobooks or radio ads are definitely not my calling. Luckily, my voice isn’t recognizable.  How? Well fun fact, when I showed the recording to my partner Elliot, it took them two listens to even believe it was me. Elliot thought it was someone completely different. Hopefully others think the same.

Lastly, here’s my written synopsis if you would like to read it again:

An old threat rises in the land of Orlon when a mysterious and powerful warlock resurrects the basilisk once defeated from the ancient legends. Volos, the warlock is using the basilisks evil eye as a way of controlling individuals in his army. Its gaze can control, petrify, and even kill. Everyday the army grows larger as innocent creatures, humanoids, and people are being taken into the Tower of Ladon to be converted or some are willingly joining. The Tower of Ladon was dominated by Volos and is used as his base.It was once a monument to the heroes who sacrificed themselves in the older tales. His goal is to take over all of Orlon through fear and domination. The surrounding kingdoms are each sending one champion to all unite on a quest to ambush and defeat  Volos in secret while the rest if the  kingdoms come together to prepare for war.

Hypebeast/ Hypetrak

https://hypebeast.com/

Hypebeast is my blog of choice because of its constantly updating posts and it really ties into my interests and what I want to eventually do. Hypebeast is a blog that focuses on all aspects of fashion, culture and lifestyle and hones in on styles and brands, from streetwear to high-end and from  barely established to well-known. I have been reading this blog since I was a freshman in high school and it has influenced a lot of what I wear and design today. I have watched Hypebeast grow quite a bit as well, when I first started visiting the site their was just postings and forum discussion.

The site functions very smoothly and efficiently and uses a great base white format and lets the posting shine instead of a flashy background. The blog always posts a full new page of information everyday and their postings are clear and concise. They have all their specific categories on top so if you are looking for one specific aspect of fashion or culture they have a tab for your exact niche. Hypebeast used to also incorporate music into their website but have now split into two different entities. Hypetrak is an offshoot of Hypebeast that specifically deals with music and all the artists and characters in the music world.

Chris Stuckmann

In case I haven’t made it clear, I am a film buff and love to talk about movies I like. Last term, I started writing movie reviews for The Torch and have had a blast with them so far. Even though I like writing about my feelings towards a particular film, I personally feel like there are times where writing my thoughts don’t quite capture how I feel.

This reviewer, Chris Stuckmann, is one that I’ve been following since 2011 and he’s one of the few personalities that I feel like I can trust, or at the very least, respect what he has to say. He tries to review each film with respect. However, it’s  fun to watch his negative reviews, since the first 2-3 months are filled with horrible movies that he has to review.

His website is one of his many venues to communicate with his fanbase. He doesn’t update his blogsite as much as his social media pages, which is disappointing, but nothing that ruins his reputation. Each review post contains the youtube video of his review, along with a summary of his review written out below the video. I wish that he could design these pages to be more visually grabbing, but they do the job just fine.

W17-P3 Blog search

I was looking at a blog called Sportsblog.com, a professional blog where they cover both college and professional sports. They also have a podcast channel, which I haven’t gotten around to listening to. This blog seems to be, for the most part, a quick story blog about whatever’s going on in the world of sports. It also has multiple ads on the side promoting WordPress, so I thought it’d be safe to assume that this blog was made on WordPress. Sportsblog.com often sites USA Today Sports and ESPN, they have valid information and turn it into a good piece to read. As for the site as a whole, it’s very simple and easy to get to the topics of which you want to read about.

I only looked at a few articles, one being about Carmelo Anthony’s situation as a New York Knick, using USA Today Sports as its main source. For awhile now Anthony has been the main talk in the NBA because he’s most likely on his way out, but Sportsblog.com gave it an interesting twist because of Anthony’s no trade clause in his contract. They titled the article fittingly, “Anthony Holds the Knicks Hostage”, which means he controls where he wants to go; however, until then, the Knicks basically have to do what Anthony wants them to. Here’s a link to the article below: Screen Shot 2017-01-30 at 1.41.33 PM.png

Blogging about a Blog On a Blog Blog

So… blogs are still a thing? I didn’t really know. I thought maybe our society evolved( or devolved) away from the blog like we did with livejournal, myspace and chatrooms. Some friends of mine ribbed me a little when I told I was blogging for class. If it was a podcast on the other hand, they’d probably want to be on it. So this assignment is a challenge not just because I’m doing it last minute-ish but because I don’t know many blogs…especially professional blogs…that I could enjoy and recommend! I mean If this assignment was “Find a blog about professional wrestling that’s insightful with a lot of cuss words in it, then write a blog about it” (https://www.whatculture.com) I would be on it but I’m trying to stick to the program. So I found Bob Keefer’s Eugene Art Talk (https://eugenearttalk.com/) .

screen-shot-2017-01-30-at-12-54-10-pmFormer Register Guard/Current Eugene Weekly writer Bob Keefer’s ad free blog is all about the theater, music and fine art around town in Eugene. His post are not boring and he doesn’t seem like a snotty person. My brother does theater locally and I looked to see if he said anything bad about him, so he’s ok in my book, though its kind of difficult to find older posts because you have to scroll through all of his more recent posts. It’s not like I regularly go the opera or to a symphony, but maybe for a date night I could go on this website and see what going in fine arts locally, read the review and maybe impress my lady friend of a night of wine and rose… or something I don’t know, check it out. Later, check out we hate movies (www.whmpodcast.com), it’s a podcast where they discuss bad movies with a lot of cuss words!

Cheers,

Billy Dyball

A blog that helps…

Photography is one of those things that everyone has a different opinion on what looks “right”. For some people a crisp clear shot is the way to go. Some might not see it that way. A hazy out of focus, underexposed shot. Which I thought many of the images from this blog could be categorized into nature or architecture photography. I believe those are areas of interest for me. My best photos would fall under these categories as well. I think that’s why this blog caught my eye. Other than the big red bar at the bottom of the screen, red is one of my favorite colors.

screen-shot-2017-01-30-at-12-22-20-pm         One good resource I found on this blog was under the Photography Tutorials tab.Under this tab you will find videos explaining some general techniques covering almost everything from taking your shot, to retouching it and creating your final piece. Like many other photography blogs, he also includes a list of software and equipment that he uses. This can be useful to find more information on the equipment and software that you could best utilize to create your projects. The Blog is being produced in a useful and entertaining way. It’s useful for beginners as it gives you some tips on setting up your shot. It can also be a entertaining blog for the seasoned photographers by giving them a look into someone else’s view of photography.
