We were assigned a project for our Intro to Media Arts class at Lane Community College. The project was innocently named “Image Editing”, but the theme was “Five”. Five of what? I asked myself. Five was the theme for a two minute video and we were left with creative control over what five meant to us. I had a packed weekend ahead of me with class projects and work. I found a way to integrate the creation of the materials for my project into a walk I had to travel through in Downtown Eugene. It was a bit out of my way but not too far off from the bank I had to walk to.

As you can see in the map above, I was dropped off near the University of Oregon Campus and walked to 5th Street Market to keep the theme of 5. Every 5 minutes of this walk I took 5 pictures, I stopped to take these pictures 5 times over my journey. In this video you will see my journey.

It was not too hard to come up with an idea. I wrote down many ideas in a notepad over the course of a couple of minutes during class and the hard part was narrowing my ideas down. Some were complex and I knew that I had a busy weekend ahead of me. So I chose this simple idea. I am okay with how the video turned out. Freesound.org had thousands of free sounds for me to use to create the ambient water, traffic and gusty wind sounds that I wanted to use to help the viewer immerse in the experience I had. It helps.

So there is more to the story of how I created this short photography series project. I had a camera checked out from Lane CC’s Media checkout center that I used for a Portrait Photography project that Friday morning. The checkout called me that morning to let me know that I was late to return the camera and could I get to school to drop off the camera between 1-2pm. I jumped on a bus and turned the camera in on time, the guys at the Media Equipment Checkout Center were really cool about me dropping of the camera late and asked me if I would like to hold onto the camera for the rest of the weekend. Since I knew I was going to have to be all over town that day I said, “No”. This is why many of my photos are such poor quality, I used my cellphone camera for the pictures and immediately regretted not checking the camera out. However, I have learned through a photographer on YouTube, Chase Jarvis, that the best camera is the one that you have on you, and he promotes using whatever camera you have, cellphone or SLR. This was the challenge.

Editing and pulling the photos together into a final product is the most fun part for me. I didn’t have a lot of time but you’ll see what I did. I hope this video doesn’t keep anyone from wanting to take a walk through Downtown Eugene. I somehow chose a less beautiful path to shoot this project, but was challenged to try to find interesting shots where interesting objects were usually hard to find.

This project ended up being a lot of fun to work on, even though I had a hard time in the beginning coming up with a singular idea to go with, I decided to keep it simple and landed on “5 Things To Do on a Weekend.” I thought about the different ways I could go about making this project and i ended up wanting to try video since I had never worked with it before. Since I was inexperienced with shooting video, working on this project was cool but also made me feel like a fish out of water. I was definitely grateful that my friend was super patient while I spent time figuring out what I was doing with the camera and willing to be in my video. I’ve also never worked with Premiere before so this project definitely was all around a good learning experience, even from figuring out how to import and work on the video clips to maneuvering through the editing options, it was all super new and intimidating. One thing I wanted to work with more was figuring out how to mess with the audio levels in Premiere but I ended up running out of time. I’m glad I got to experiment with a new program and try a new form of media to work with overall, I feel this project was a good stepping stone for future work, it certainly helped solidify my interest in video/film.

My sweet little Suzi!

 

This project ended up being a real pain because of technical difficulties with cameras not working for me and such. None of my original ideas were able to work out so I hacked this together from pictures that I had saved onto my camera. I am satisfied that at the last minute I can come up with a project that works for the assignment that is due.

This video was thrown together in about an hour on premier. I like working with premier, it offers the artist a lot of tools to work with. I am at least glad that even if all other things fall apart, I can manage to pull something together for the class with the existing tools that I have available to work with.

I have used a few of my many photographs from around Eugene to do this project. The photos are of different times of day and of different weather in Eugene, from morning to night, from sun to rain to ice. It is not very impressive, but it still shows that if all else fails, a project still has hope to be completed even at the last minute. I am not very happy with it, but the deadline has been met, which is what is important.

When we were first introduced to this assignment I had a few ideas. My first one was to record myself doing five random things in a long-lived MMO called Runescape. I wanted to do this as a joke to my friends online but I never came to push myself to play the game and record footage. Instead, to keep it simpler, I decided to show the last five teams that are still undefeated in this year’s college football season. If you are around me enough you will come to notice how excited and hyped I am about not only college sports but sports in general. This year I am especially filled with hype and excitement because my favorite team, Wisconsin Badgers, are one of the five teams that are still undefeated. As a kid who grew up in Wisconsin I can never betray my home team and this year I believe they have the potential to go to the Rose Bowl. Predicting the bowl games are still risky and inaccurate at this moment but I still have a lot of hope in my team. If the Badgers make it to the Rose Bowl game you can expect to see me there. Go Badgers!!!!

For my project 5 Image editing I chose 5 drawing exercises as my theme. I switched themes a few times because I wanted to involve people on a trip I took over the weekend, and I’m learning I keep picking the wrong people. I thought maybe I should stick with something I like to do that I can do alone. I was also drawn to this idea because lately I have been focusing on trying to learn from mistakes and let go when it comes to my art. These drawing exercises really help me to gain accuracy in my art and I enjoy doing them so that is a plus!
I had a few troubles in the making of this, like misspelling the word “exercise” way too many times, and even after the fact not noticing I did it again until after I’d started editing. This caused the exercise shot sequence to not quite match up with the rest of the video. I also ran into and knocked over my tripod three times, and lost the charger to my camera so I was rushed to squeeze in whatever footage I could with the last bar. Using sharpie was a bit hard to accentuate the detail I have the skills to develop in the exercises but for the use of time and lighting, I enjoyed the simplicity.

I took my nephew Takoda to the store to buy his little brother a toy. I stuck a go pro on him and let him go nuts. he had a really great time with me. The only problem is that he’s a 5 yr cameraman. There are a lot of bad cuts edit wise because as I said, he’s 5. The majority of fun I had was when I was trying to figure out how to put this online and get it all going on WordPress here. Yes this is my first project that I’ve turned in so I really really really really really really enjoy it. to film it all I started recording from the moment we left the house until shortly after William getting his toy. I only ran through the whole thing with Koda once. There were no extra takes so it was sort of a challenge shrinking a 35 min adventure into under 2 mins but it worked out. Koda chose the music. he’s really excited for you guys to see it. William really had a lot of fun doing his part too. all he had to do was wait at home and get a free toy. he had no problems with that at all.

 

 

playing around with video editing is great! with a max of 2 minutes to work with I decided  to do a quick slideshow about thing that you can do around Oregon.  with plenty of things to actually choose from I wanted to cover a few of my favorite things and a joke at the end about the new legalities of pot shops. I would have loved to create a new theme instead of a top five slide show  but with the time I had it seemed to work out fine. I really wanted to remind people about the natural beauty of Oregon  and a few touristy  spots as well. obviously I could have added snowboarding or the beautiful eastern desert landscapes or camping and river activities  not to mention music venues and art galleries but my top five for the sake of this theme landed on the basics.

retrospectively I don’t travel enough at all to enjoy all those other things and my list has a 2 hours from Eugene minimum  kinda thing going for it which I think is well enough because  you’re  two hours from the coast desert or mountains anyway.

I had a bit of fun making this. and got more familiar with premier editing  along the way. hope you enjoyed the music and imagery!!thank you!
