P3 RoadTrip Nation

My road in life took a while to figure out.

I was raised in an old-fashioned way—my parents didn’t put a lot of pressure on me to figure out what I was going to do for a career because it was assumed I would just get married and have kids.

After graduating from high school, I didn’t have any guidance on what to do next, so I took a gap year to figure it out.

Attended community college at Cabrillo College in Santa Cruz, California—I was originally a nutrition major, but in my second year I changed my major to fine arts.

I was introduced to graphic design after taking a design and composition class and I realized that was the subject that I was truly interested in.

Transferred to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where I earned my bachelor’s degree in graphic design and computer graphics.

After graduating from UCLA, I decided to take a web design course at the ArtCenter College of Design and get involved in the technological side of design.

I worked as a web designer for various companies before getting the opportunity to become a co-founder and art director for a fashion apparel company.

I now run my own brand design and marketing company, in addition to being the creative arts director for the Museum of Tolerance at the Simon Wiesenthal Center.

I loved this assignment. Once I started looking through career choices I felt more motivated then ever to stay focused on School and Art.

Eli Quinters is a tattoo artist based in New York. He started tattooing in college and two years later was professional. He is a very inspiring artist and he intrigued me with quotes such as, “There’s nothing that’s permanent, I’ve realized that.”, and “so many of your decisions are based on your environment…so as soon as that changes, you can’t help but change too.”.

On the outskirts of Vienna

For my report, I selected the video editor and animator, Peter Szijarto. Like Peter, I was always drawn to film since I was a youngster, long, long ago. He worked a wide variety of jobs before finding his passion, which I can also identify with. Below is a screenshot that shows him and his milestones.

I am now working in the direction of video and video editing and I am having great fun doing so.

One sheet, two-sheet, three sheets or four…some use less and some use more. What am I?

What has arms and legs, but no head?

What can’t be burned in a fire nor drowned in water?

I have a big mouth and I’m quite a load. I’m not gossip, but I get involved in everyone’s dirty business. What am I?

Stepping out? Wear me first! I’ll protect your feet from the worst.

Tall and strong, I stay outside. The sun, the rain, they’re by my side. I give birds homes and help you breathe. I even give you fruit to eat.

Here I come and there I go. I move really fast, anywhere I go. That’s why you take me when you’re in a hurry. When I zoom by, I might look blurry.

Kick up your feet, if you will. I’ll keep you company through Netflix and chill. Though you might not notice, I’m always here, to hold your zines, your snacks, and beer.

You say we’re pals, that we’re best friends. But only until the morning ends. You say I give you fuel for the day. And when we’re done, you’re gone away.

Don’t frown at me, I made it clear. Won’t make a difference if you’re near. Just stand in front and I’ll show you exactly how the world will know you.

About Me

Hello my name is Svetlana Starodubtseva and I’m 18 years old. I was born and raised in Eugene, Oregon. I’m the first one out of my entire family to be born in America. While every one of my family members was born in Russia. Hence my first and last name. This is the first year that I am attending Lane, I’m taking the graphic design program which I’m very much looking forward to. Middle school was when I started taking all of the design/tech electives and since then I’ve been very keen on becoming a graphic designer.

My hobbies include drawing, painting, learning to play guitar, photography, and skateboarding. Out of all of those hobbies I mainly focus on drawing. My preferred medium are colored pencils, I’ve tried branching out to other mediums but my outcomes weren’t too successful. Then if I’m not drawing I’m trying to teach myself how to play guitar. Sadly, I was not born with a musical bone in my body. But for the most part I’ve been able to grasp the basics pretty quickly.

After I finish the Media Arts program ideally I’d want to become a graphic designer and work with companies/individuals/etc… But overall I really hope to build on the skills that I already have and find ways to be more creative.
