Roadtrip Nation

For my Roadtrip Nation report, I chose to do mine on architecture, which is the career that I would like to pursue. As I was looking at the site to find somebody to research, one person on there stood out to me the most. Their name is David Schwarz, and the reason they stood out was because of the way they started their career and their mindset that helped them support it. The main part that stood out about his career is that it started out with him almost having to give up on the business he was starting to being very successful and stable. His mindset stood out to me because he strives for having good standards with the projects he does. He also talks about how people should only go for careers that they are passionate about, which I think is very important as well.

Effie Brown

Effie Brown is an award winning film producer known for projects such as “Dear White People” and “Real Women Have Curves”. They were born and raised in New Jersey. She graduated from Loyola Marymount University with a bachelors in Cinematography and Film/Video Production, and a bachelor in Drama and Dramatics/Theatre Arts. Starting out in the industry, Effie faced a lot of gender and racial discrimination. Oprah was one of the only prominent successful black women in the industry and there was not a clear path that Effie could follow that had been established. Effie’s mentor said to her, The biggest lie that we are told is that there is room for only one of us…when you get to the top you will see that there is room. You have to lean back and help somebody else make their way up.” Through networking and creating a community of mutual support to uplift one another, she found success.

Lance Bangs

Lance Bangs is a filmmaker and music video director who did not get a traditional education for his career path. Michael Stipe from REM came across his work and invited to join a film production group in Athens, Georgia. Through this group he was able to begin his career by creating music videos and documentaries. He gained traction from his work and collaborated with several local bands that would visit Athens. Bangs has produced videos for bands such as Green Day, Nirvana, Death Cab for Cutie, Sonic Youth, and many more. He proclaims himself as an opportunist and loves to gain as much experience as he can with his work.

Walter Murch

Film editor and sound designers

Walter Murch develops a passion and a hobby of editing film as an 11 year old which he disregards in his older age as child things until he watches one movie. That movie floods his thoughts with inspiration and he realizes that the passion that he had as a kid could be in fact a career that he could go into. This happened years later in his late 20s and he was going to college for something completely different and that’s just life. After that movie he goes into film editing and pursues this career path and he becomes a well known film director who has worked on some classic movies like the Godfather and Apocalypse now. His story and development of his career is why I chose him. It’s human and relatable, he didn’t know what he was going to do and he was going to school for something completely different, yet one movie sparked the passion he had as a kid and instead of dismissing it he holds on to it.

Margarita Barry – Roadtrip Nation

Margarita Barry is a graphic designer from Detroit, Michigan, and the founder of a pop-up shop called 71 Pop. The shop serves as a place where a rotating selection of local artists can come together to display and sell their work. She founded her business after being laid off from a previous job, one which she was not passionate about. She went to college to study graphic design and journalism, but had yet to find a career that satisfied her. After being laid off, she started a Kickstarter, which won a competition and raised $8,000, this was the starting point for 71 Pop. Margarita is also a big proponent of helping others, which is why she started a business that’s all about helping artists distribute their work.

The screenshot I took “exceeded maximum upload size” despite how many times I resized it, but you can find her if you Google her.

Riddle Me This…

One sheet, two-sheet, three sheets or four…some use less and some use more. What am I?
Toilet Paper
What has arms and legs, but no head?
Clock
What can’t be burned in a fire nor drowned in water?
Ice
I have a big mouth and I’m quite a load. I’m not gossip, but I get involved in everyone’s dirty business. What am I?
Vacuum Cleaner
Stepping out? Wear me first! I’ll protect your feet from the worst.
Shoes
Tall and strong, I stay outside. The sun, the rain, they’re by my side. I give birds homes and help you breathe. I even give you fruit to eat.
Trees
Here I come and there I go. I move really fast, anywhere I go. That’s why you take me when you’re in a hurry. When I zoom by, I might look blurry.
Cars
Kick up your feet, if you will. I’ll keep you company through Netflix and chill. Though you might not notice, I’m always here, to hold your zines, your snacks, and beer.
Coffee Table
You say we’re pals, that we’re best friends. But only until the morning ends. You say I give you fuel for the day. And when we’re done, you’re gone away.
Coffee
Don’t frown at me, I made it clear. Won’t make a difference if you’re near. Just stand in front and I’ll show you exactly how the world will know you.

About Me!

Hello! My name is Savina Fetch. I am a sophomore enrolled at Lane Community College majoring in a business transfer degree. I chose this for the easiest way possible for my business credits to transfer to University of Oregon; where I will be attending in the future. I took Introduction to Media Arts because I felt like it would be a beneficial skill to use in the business major especially while wanting to work for a bigger company that are skilled in media arts. I never planned on attending Lane at first because I wanted a full college feel in my first years of school. Sadly, COVID changed that for me, but it turned out to be a great opportunity for me. I ended up at Lane because I lived at home my first year, saved money and started playing for the Lane’s women soccer team. Soccer has been something that I’ve surrounded my life with for a very long time. I grew up in a smaller town named McMinnville Oregon, and played soccer, basketball and tennis throughout my childhood and high school. A lot of my hobbies included sports because it’s what took most of my time, but I enjoy broadening my horizons of life by always trying different things. I would consider myself a big foodie because I love trying new foods and cooking them. My favorite kind of food is asian inspired plates like a good type of curry or sushi. I also enjoy cooking more Hispanic inspired dishes because my grandma and nana taught me how to make tons of recipes when I was a child. My favorite dish to make is either chicken mole with Spanish rice or when I make pozole with my dad. I spend most of my time reading or watching anime or going thrift shopping with my boyfriend. The manga I am reading as of right now is Tomie, and I am in the middle of watching Code Geass. Thanks for reading about me!
