P3: RoadTrip Nation: “Roadmap to Careers”

Follow the compelling alternative…you can always go back to make up for what you’ve chosen to forgo

-Kat Cole-
Kat Cole-COO & President of FOCUS Brands

Kat Cole was raised by a single mother who struggled with alcoholism, so she had the responsibility of helping raise her sisters from a young age. She was the first person on either side of her family to get into college, and she didn’t have any examples of family members working in “white collar” jobs.
She started out as an electrical engineering and computer science major, but dropped out before the end of her second year to pursue a job opportunity for Hooters, opening franchises around the world. Ka has worked in the foodservice industry her whole life, starting from the bottom and working her way up—asks, “Who better to run the business than someone who knows every piece of it?” Becoming an executive at Hooters of America when Kat was 26—she experienced imposter syndrome because, in boardrooms, she was usually the youngest, the only woman, and the one with the least education.
Kat decided to go back to school to pursue her MBA at Georgia State University, which she received without ever having earned a bachelor’s degree.
Last but not least, Kat was recruited by FOCUS Brands when she was 31 to become the president of Cinnabon. She is now the president and COO of FOCUS Brands—credits her success to getting involved with rapidly growing companies and constantly desiring to learn more.

P1 about me

I’m a second year multimedia Design student at LCC. I’m originally from Northern California but I’ve lived in Eugene for four years this coming August. I have a primary interest in film production and cinematography. I have a secondary interest in audio production and graphic design/animation graphics. I also take analog film photos as a hobby(@filmfr0g on instagram). During my time at Lane Community College I’ve created a portfolio filled with shorts films, Adobe after effects animation graphics projects, protools and Audition audio recordings, photoshop and illustrator graphic design pieces, Maya animation renders, and photo collections.

After I graduate this spring I hope to pursue an entry level media career with room for creative projects, or/or save money to further my education and obtain my bachelors degree. The UT Austin film program would be a dream, but I would consider transferring to University of Oregon or UCLA as well depending on the scholarship/grant opportunities and if I have the motivation to regain my California residency. If I choose to further my education I hope to gain more experience in script writing and go onto learning all sides of production including acting and directing. Biiig dreams.

Christof Putzel created a documentary of Kenya for his college thesis instead of writing a paper. People thought he was crazy for taking on a task like that and he even had to take an extra year in college just to finish putting the video together. But in the end he created a documentary that he was proud of / moved by. It even went on to win student academy awards and would be presented in several film festivals.

RTN Dennis Muren

Screenshotted picture from Dennis Muren’s interview on RoadTrip Nation

Dennis Muren is a well-known special effects guru, mostly known for his work on the famous Star Wars series. He started his work during college but got offered the Star Wars job afterward. At first, Muren denied the offer at the Star Wars set because of the amount of money that was offered. He decided to go back to it because it was to the point where he had to choose his passion or be unhappy for the rest of his life. Originally, Muren wasn’t planning on being so well-known for his work and getting 8 Academy Awards for the special effects work in Star Wars, but there he is.

P1 About Me (Alex Seydel)

Hello! My name is Alex Seydel, I’ve been a student in the Multimedia program at lane for 2 years and have been taking photos/into photography for the past 7.

Some things about me, I’m a pretty quiet person so you might not hear me talk that much (or at all), but If you want talk to me, feel free to walk up to me cause I’d love to talk. In terms of other things I’m interested in, I’m into track and field/running and I’m also a bit of a video game nerd.

In terms of what I plan on doing after my time at lane, I hope to become either a freelance photographer that covers a variety of subjects. But really I’d be beyond happy to just have job in this field.

I look forward to meeting you all!

P1-About Me

Hello, my name is Tonari Abiori. Other names I go by are Ton (like wonton), Mr.TonTon and Tontonium. I work at Fred Meyer, currently as a dairy clerk. My hobbies include playing video games, using Adobe’s media software, and collecting figures, plushies and pins of anything r related to Nintendo, Sega and Sanrio. I despise being seen in public, so I try to stay home as much as possible. My parents, however, keep me up with their grocery needs. I graduated from Willamette High School in 2018 and became relived because I don’t have to deal with that hell anymore for the rest of my life. During my high school years, I didn’t have any career goals to pursue because I knew I would lose all my friends. While in my senior year, I wounded up a graphic design class for a semester and I ended up making the instructor so impressed she moved me up to the advanced digital arts class the following semester. Since then, I’ve decided that if I were to pursue a career, it would be graphic design.  I’ve been at Lane Community College since 2018, aiming to get my associate degree in graphic design. I started immediately after high school surprisingly and been studying at the college for over five years now. I’ve been taking a lot of breaks because I needed money and then COVID happened. Starting in fall 2022, I managed to balance out my schedule and hopefully, after taking this beginner’s class into media arts, I can use that knowledge to expand in my graphic design.
