“The Tale of Two Beths” By Beth Akerson

This digital story by EN 201 student Beth Akerson was inspired by the book Daring Greatly by Brene Brown. Beth’s instructor Merril Watrous says of this project, “Beth has created a story that I want to visit and revisit over and over again. From the first video of that winding path through the beautiful if daunting visual images, we watch her ‘step into the ring of her vulnerability’ as she dares greatly, like her text mentor – Brene Brown. The images of her family that she’s chosen for the last minute of the story call out to us. For so many of us who are parents, we dare to do more in their name than in our own. I expect and look forward to seeing more digital stories from this talented videographer.

I am also daring to be great. I don’t like people to see vulnerable but i have learn that this is not a problem; this is a strength that we should achieve. I like the format of your video. I like how the stair represents obstacles but at the end each of them will be worth it because you have achieved what you wanted.

It is hard for people to come out of their comfort zone and dare to be great-as you said it makes people feel vulnerable, as if they may fail, and that can be really scary. This is really inspiring for people who are afraid to take those steps, and your visuals worked very well with your story by demonstrating obstacles to climb, but at the end showing your happy family climbing the steps together 🙂

Your story of the “Two Beths” is powerful and inspiring. Your choice of words and pictures draws out the emotion and the vulnerability you talked about. Thank you for sharing this story – it is one I can relate to in so many ways!
