Rortron Interview

Screen Shot 2018-11-05 at 8.56.40 AM.png

This weekend I had an opportunity to meet Rory Beck, transfer graduate from Lane CC, who had finished the Multimedia Design program back in 2012. For the past three years he has had the opportunity to make money as a local DJ. Rory produces a verity of  instrumentals and sampled hip-hop tracks. His SoundCloud has a collection of soul infused house, and an extensive collection of his mashups from classic R&B, Soul, Funk, Blues, and 80’s vibe music. I suggest checking it out, good stuff….

Rortron on SoundCloud

We met at Ta Ra Rin and talk over big plates of Pad Thi, helping to make a fulfilling Interview. He was very passionate when talking about his music and the process to find gigs. We talked about selling yourself as an artist and how the strategy to play for the right price can be very intimidating. Dealing with bookers and promoters sometimes can be stressful when trying to make it as an artist. Most of his gigs are at Hi-Fi including an occasionally MC’s at the Funk Wednesday Jam night there. Beck also plays at Barnlight, and Blair Alley. He also discussed how meeting other musicians, fans, and producers have been inspiring for that artistic drive hiding inside everybody. Rory said that recently he has gone through a major transition in life, and music along with meditation practices has been helping him through with the transformation. I related to that quite a bit, and felt inspired to do art and music more, helping myself get it together.

He is truly apart of the expanding music scene here in Eugene, doing collaborations with other artists and producing tracks for them as well. And plans on day to be a producer creating albums for artists alike and to also work with children. He talked about the joys of introducing kids to music and the U R Awesome none-profit he has worked for, and one day maybe creating his own.

A date for his next show has not been made yet, but I know I will be attending and you should to if you like to dance and enjoy a DJ set. Till then he is working on many projects including another local Hip Hop artist from the multimedia program here at Lane. RxN – Simon Baum, who has music videos of youtube.

As an artist and musician myself, it was inspiring to talk with someone out there doing what the enjoy. And hopefully, made a connection I could one day work with.

Last Transmission

For this assignment I chose to create my own short script for a sci-fi transmission released from a ship and the last of the possible crew members still alive. I gathered a bunch of samples from creative commons and then edited them In Audition. Some of the samples will probably sound familiar other than the scripted voice which I recorded myself. I acted out the character including an accent, for hearing my own voice sounds weird and takes me out of the scene I’m trying to create.

The Transmission was sent from a ship coming back from an excavation site on some planet. Something happened to the crew at the excavation after digging up some sort of artifacts or remains. The ship picks up the artifacts, leaving behind everything else at the site. The members of the ship soon found out that something is aboard the ship…

As an artist who branches out anywhere from Drawing to 3D to Music, this place has plenty for me to fill my head with information and ideas to help push me as an artist to hopefully keep creating. The technology news it provides includes up to date articles of whats happening out there in the industry. If you have a chance to checkout the site, go to the All Topics and find the WordPress articles to help build that site you have been waiting for, and showcase that portfolio of yours.

I will probably use this site quite a bit when finding information that can help, I might even subscribe to the magazines they provide. Just from quickly browsing the site I have already found and bookmarked articles that sparked my interest, and have found plenty of links to other websites to find additional information.

All in all its an easy site to navigate, and is very to the point when announcing something. I hope this helped provide you with a new source to grow that imagination of yours. Also, check out The Gnomon Workshop. It has been a favorite of mine when seeking amazing works of art, finding artists and discovering the possibilities out there.

F18-P1 About Me…

Hello hello,

My name is Lucien M. Guidotti-Lawrence, and here is where I begin to tell you about myself. I usually don’t share the things I’ve done and/or haven’t done with my life, but I suppose now I should start somewhere. It’s hard to look back on it all and say the interesting things and leave out boring nonsense. So then, I suppose I’m where I am today because of barriers and catalysts that of which made me do something, and/or not do something. Procrastination has given me the tools to ponder all the big little things I “Dream” of becoming. But who knows, and why should I know? I’ve lived in many cities and towns, not knowing before hand that I would ever reside there. It kind of just happens, just like picking and choosing the details to share about a small spec of dust in history.

When it comes to artwork, saying something, or even anything at all is a very big task. Now matter how easy it may come, there are still limitations we create for ourselves. Whether it be drawing something proportionately, or shading those highlights and shadows to create a realistic light source. Either way I’m slowly learning it doesn’t matter. It’s doesn’t actually matter because if someone likes or doesn’t like the work you do, if they understand what the message is and are willing to interpret it the same way that you do, they will appreciate it for however much time the have to spare. And that is why I love art. Because being understood is the best thing you can do for yourself, no matter how much people even take the time to notice the details, as long as they support you in your ideas, that’s a win win.

This is why I have begun a process to re-find myself by going back to school. Forcing my hand to draw, my fingers to type and to click all over a screen to find and create something real. It’s easy to think about all the things you want to do in life, but what is it like to actually try and achieve those pacing thoughts, meandering like gas molecules in an brain to full to do anything, waiting to sublimate into a solid stagnate lump of “I’m actually not doing anything, but if I think about it hard enough maybe it could happen.” Until it’s so far gone you’re stuck where you are as opposed to where you could have been.

It takes the time we don’t have to make the time to do it, so if not now when? I haven’t found a better time other than now to at least try.
