The Answers

This will be my final entry for this blog at least for this class…I plan on continuing to do blog entries for things that have caught my interest! So do stay tuned!.

For my final assignment I wanted to do a piece that spreads an important message so the subjects I chose were depression and suicide. Depression affects many people all over the world as does Suicide it’s nothing to bew taken lightly or joked about.

“According to depression statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 9 percent of adult Americans have feelings of hopelessness, despondency, and/or guilt that generate a diagnosis of depression. At any given time, about 3 percent of adults have major depression, also known as major depressive disorder, a long-lasting and severe form of depression. In fact, major depression is the leading cause of disability for Americans between the ages of 15 and 44, according to the CDC. Understanding these very real depression statistics helps paint a fuller picture of the impact of depression in America.”

It is my wish that this piece helps those who deal with this demon known as depression and can be helped to not give in and commit suicide. Remember, it is never too late to seek help.

From Pen and Paper to Digital to Real Life: An interview with Don Carson

I had the honorable pleasure of getting a chance to speak to and interview one of, in my most humble of opinions, the most inspiring concept artists, Don Carson. He went to school at the Academy of Art University (at the time he went there it was known as the Academy of Art College) in San Francisco California and studied illustration. At the time he was a student the idea of a concept illustrator was unheard of, when he spoke with the current head of the department.

“You know, honestly, I really do not particularly care for doing finished paintings; I really like doing just the roughs. Is there a job where I can do nothing but the roughs?”

And she said.

“Absolutely not”

And so when he left the academy he did have a portfolio, but it was of the same items that he and his fellow students worked on and so, he had no real work to show. At that moment down the road he decided to take the skills he learned and to do a project just for him just for the heck of it and so he did paintings of Disneyland a sketchbook of the details of Disneyland. Even though he did not find a publisher it did however expand his portfolio with one hundred and fifty pieces of art that is quite a bit to have under your belt not bad for “just another Academy student”.

He has worked on numerous famous projects such as The Dickens Christmas Faire in San Francisco California, The Southern Renaissance Pleasure Faire in both Agoura and San Bernardino California, creating 3D products and environments at IMVU Inc. in Palo Alto California, and of course his work for Walt Disney Imagineering, The Jim Henson Company, Universal Studios, and his current work for Dreamworks. His full résumé is available on his website at http://doncarsoncreative.com/ as well as his blog.

This experience has inspired me to keep going at this full steam ahead! From hearing of his experiences to learning about what tools he used and still uses to the techniques he applies. Learn solid design basics, never be afraid of learning something new, look back on what you have learned, keep drawing and designing, understand good composition, color, value, anatomy, design, and the correct way to use art supplies will be something you will depend on every day of your career. The best structures, even artistic ones are only as good as their foundations, and never be afraid to use your imagination because you never what magic you can create with your own two hands.

In closing I am most grateful to have had this experience and I look forward to the experiences ahead I only hope to do proper credit to those who work and study in the field of concept and design. And so I sharpen my pencils and fire up my computer and will continue to work as hard and as best as I can. To the Undiscovered Country I set forth, excelsior!

Yet another project completed!

What I was trying to accomplish is to create a visual representation of what the number 5 means to me. Using various tools at my disposal such as the internet, iMovie, and my own imagination I was able to piece together a piece that I am truly proud of. A way I can explain why I did what I did is to explain using the Tarot.

  1. Ace of Swords reversed: The reversed Ace of Swords card generally means that one must be wary of illusions.

The Darkness can reach into our most primal fears and can cause illusions such as the feeling you are being watched or that maybe something is after you.

  1. Knight of Swords reversed: When you travel be prepared to spend a much longer time in your journey.

Immortal, having eternal life….Life is a journey that begins when we are born and becomes even more intense when we die and pass to the new life. So either being immortal in the physical sense or in the spiritual sense is up to fate.

  1. 5 of Wands: Your need to believe in yourself is stronger

Invincible, nothing in this world can harm you…Or can it? Invincibility is not something meant for us humans despite us trying to act like it does with our rash thinking.

  1. The Tower: Having to pay attention to what you are doing in all situations in more important than ever now. Your nerves may be frayed and your mind in chaos, do what you must to stay calm.

Insanity is a harsh and uncaring mistress that haunts your mind, body, and soul….Those whispers in the dark, those shadows you may see on the wall….

  1. 10 of Swords: Can you trust in what someone is telling you? Can you trust in the situation at hand? No

When one is lost in the dark woods and they hear a voice telling you to go a certain direction…Our first instinct is to believe them and go because of primal fear of what’s out there…But be very wary for they may lead you to a pack of hungry wolves.

The main idea I was trying to convey is to be wary of what you do in life and what may come….Be strong and do not allow the “What Ifs” to rule your life.

Announcement!

Well, what i was trying to get out of this is an understanding on how to use Audacity, to have fun doing so, and to learn a new audio software so not only have I used Pro Tools….I have Audacity under my belt as well. The idea here was to create a Public Service Announcement about a subject my persona, The Malkavian Gamer, feels passionately about in this case it’s the rights of his fellow psychopaths at the local asylum…I tell you what I feel sorry for Mr.Resident Physician, but then again he really should know better than to mistreat his patients…..Ha ha ha. At any rate I had a lot of fun with this assignment and can’t wait for the next one! Excelsior!

Such inspiration from such a humble blog

While searching around the internet I came across the blog of an incredible artist by the name of Matt Rhodes, the link is below.

Inspiration can come from many sources and one of them is to look at the work of others like the work of Matt Rhodes, the current Lead Concept Artist on Dragon Age: Inquisition at Bioware. I find his concept art to be exquisite and complex plus his use of color in his completed pieces is truly a sight to behold using a variety of many palates.

What I find to be the most inspiring from his collection are his studies primarily his anatomical studies.

I have learned a great deal about professionalism from his example and only hope to strive and keep going to I can reach the levels that he has; it may take quite a few years, but I am not afraid of hard work. Keep practicing, take your time, and just relax let it come to you are the three things that I remember being taught while going through the art classes here at Lane yet, that’s not how it always goes. This kind of profession can be very stressful what with the deadlines and the black cloud called failure looming over your head, but you cannot allow this cloud to control the situation as long as you did your best that’s all that truly matters. Artists like Matt Rhodes I am sure get stressed out but remember, have fun with your art if it’s getting to the point where it’s getting to be stressful take a break and then come back to it do not allow it to worry you.

Good luck to all of you developing artists and remember art is about expression so sharpen those pencils, keep your chin up, and most of all have fun!

Picture 4 I am Jon Conway and I live in Eugene Oregon in the US I enjoy gaming(duh), Anime, cooking, and all kinds of other stuff. When I complete the Media Arts program I would LOVE to get into concept and design work because I feel that this is where my niche is. I draw my inspiration from many sources including the works of H.P Lovecraft, Edger Allen Poe, Robert E Howard and Anne Rice. When it comes to gaming I do not call myself “Hardcore” because I do not believe in labels, those are for items not people. Clan Malkavian for life! Hahahahahaha!!
