Graduation: What Happens Next?

As the school year comes to an end many of you may be graduating. What are you looking forward to in your new life? What will be some of the problems you may face? Do you feel like Lane has prepared you? But if you are not graduating like myself, how do you feel about your studies here at Lane. Meaning are they to hard, to easy, or are you in the perfect zone of just right. Me personally i feel some of my classes are a bit to easy, liek my computer class for instance, not to be mean or anything but the only time i show up for the class is to tunr in homework or take a test. Or if i need some help, other than i study out of the book, and catch up on my sleep. My writing class is challenging but not very hard, now that i got an idea of the teacher’s style. As of graduation, it i cant wait for it. it is not going to be this year but hopefully next year. or around 2010 is my goal lol. I don’t know if Lane has prepared me for my field yet, but i know they have made a me a better person socialy and given me a better outlook on life. And i think will help my journey to the next step of life.

The Budget: Is It Affecting Student Services?

Amongst the budget cuts do you feel you are getting what you need out of the services Lane provides for its students? Yes, Even though at time I wish I could get things quicker and a bit more efficient. But we are in this together; meaning let’s not get mad at the employees of Lane, because it takes a bit longer to get your aid or it takes a few hours to talk to someone. I know it can be stressful but it only makes it worse when you lose your cool. As of services at lane, I think we and other services are doing a good job managing with how things are and I think the people that work in the services on Lane are sometimes under appreciated and need to be thanked more often for the services they provide the students. I know I would be a different person if I never found my SSA position. I have to say if it wasn’t for my professor in my career and life planning class I would be a whole different person. I know I wouldn’t be on the blog here, and I probably would left school a long time ago. If you feel some service needs to improve maybe you can help out by applying to be SSA or any other services on campus. They are all great, But to become a SSA you can apply online @ Lane Job Connection on the Career and Employment Website. If you don’t know where that is here is the address: Click Here for Work study app or HERE for Learn and Earn app. -Jeffrey

Should Marijuana Be Legal?

Legalize it? De-criminalize it?Ho do you feel about the legalization or the De-criminalization of marijuana? Or do you feel that the state need to reinforce harsher punishments for possession of marijuana? I think it should be, but regulated like any other substance we claim not to be a “drug,” like alcohol or tobacco. i mean let it be allowed but make a crap load of money on it, set some guidelines for people to follow, like only in the safety of your home, no “high in public” like intoxicated in public. Yes there will be those few that press the guidelines but they are already doing it. legalize but increase the fines for the tickets, tax the heck out of it, and when someone screws up come down on them hard and swift, so show that you mean business. I also think we might lower some crime, by getting rid of a “forbidden fruit” symbol on it. Meaning i am going to do this to rebel, or be criminal like. If we would just inform, and by inform (i mean something different from those boring dull drug seminars or DARE programs they put us through as kids.) Because those things don’t work. Back in the day i knew kids in elementary school smoking during those DARE things. So that can be another rule, like alcohol or cigarettes there is a age limit. set a age limit and enforce it. So legalize it but increase the punishment laws and regulate and tax the heck out of it is my view point.

Should all majors require a basic computer class?

Should all majors be required to have basic computer class or classes like we have with writing classes or college math classes? By basic computer class i mean the basic understanding on how to use a computer and a basic understanding what makes a computer run. I believe we are living in a digital age and computers are the now. We can see as computers start become more than just box and a screen, with the example, the iPhone. Not trying to promote it or anything. But I like the look of it and enjoy the features. My cousin got one, and I got play with it awhile, made me want to take one less class to have the money to get one. On the other hand I believe requiring a basic computer class for all majors would be a smart choice by preparing them for the future. Depending the size, most businesses have at least one computer or more. (Or starting to lean to that) Plus having the extra computer skill looks nice on a resume. What you guys think?

Manners: Does anybody use them anymore?

Do you use manners in your daily life? Do you say sir or mam while addressing fellow someone or even a happy hello or good-day? Or do you use the greeting “hey you,” because you forgot there name? Have we all forgotten to say “excuse me” when you bump pass each other on campus? Have you ever thought about how the old ways of respect and manners is slowly fading away with each new generation?  I see it in mine all the time. I see it when I am at home visiting with my friends and we are sitting around creating a storm of profanity within our discussion. Maybe we don’t know any better or we are too lazy to try. I have been trying to get better at catching myself cursing all the time and being rude when manners mean most. I here kids all the time when I am downtown speaking as if they were in “The Big Lebowski” at that time. And no one says a thing to them. We just listen, why is that? Don’t get me wrong it is great movie a classic among classics, but it not something i look forward to hearing when i am out buying food. While searching the net on what manners met to others i found this quote by Fred Astaire “The hardest job kids face today is learning good manners without seeing any.” I like it.
Do think that we are slowly getting worst with our manners? Do you think profanity is over used to make points? And how do you think we can improve our manners?

Would The World Be Better With Women As Leaders?

Men have been socialized to suppress their emotions and not to show any weakness. Tiger wood cried on the golf course and people made a big issues about this. Tiger’s dad had died and he was hurting because his dad, hero, ect. was gone. Most men want to be masculine and an as a result, they have @##$%? up the world.
If we took a survey and men were honest, we would find out that they are not as macho behind closed doors, as they are in public. Basically men have a public image and a private image.
Women are more emotional and it is my belief that they will take different approach when dealing with a conflict. What are your thoughts?

I am not a big politic person personally. really, I was always one that wouldn’t state his or her opinion because i was so mis informed about things I would just come off as a dick. so i never talked about politics or just avoid them all together. but with with this presidential race we actually have a candidate that is a women. or one that i actually am paying attention to. sorry to say. But i think and try to not to get really upset here, but i don’t think we need a emotional person in our office, or in any office for the matter. emotions just create even more problems. a example is when its gets personal is that person able to keep the countries ideas still best in mind for the country after something happens. like in the movie 300 when the father’s son gets his chopped off, he goes on a blood rampage, watching his son die. as in the rest of the movie he acted professional in his doing, yet when emotions were involved it turned him into a mad man, filled with hate, and revenge. whats this have to with women leading nothing really, i just don’t think having emotions on top of the stress that comes with the job will hurt us more than benefit us in the long run. i am not saying men don’t have emotions just think are just better at hiding them and keeping them inside.

A Healthy Choice During Finals

This week we want peers to help their peers by talking about what choices they make to get through their finals week. What can do to a student and where can lead. Stress is a psychological and physiological response to events that upset our personal balance in some way. (some net definition) But stress can create emotional and physical affects on your body. One could depress, get more anxiety, eating disorders, head aches and back aches, frequent colds, insomnia, and it can even lead to substance abuse. With that how do you deal with the stress (if any) of dead week and finals?

Did You Know…?

The Science Division are offering some one-credit chemistry study skills courses to help chemistry students succeed in their intro and general chem classes. And ALS offers a course called Effective Learning Health Careers, which focuses on study strategies and skills for students who are planning to take science classes in preparation for health careers. It is recommended but not required to take intro classes like these so the students (at their own will) will seek a higher understanding of the subject and to help pass the class. But what if you don’t pass, have you ever thought what are the costs of taking a course twice?

and the…

Oregon Opportunity Grant: Under the Governor’s leadership, the 2007 legislature approved a historic increase in the Oregon Opportunity Grant program, doubled funding to $72 million, making college education more affordable for Oregon students. The increase will support larger grants to more students, including part-time students, enrolling in fall 2008. For many, it may mean the difference between going to college or not. For others, it can reduce student borrowing and work, and help students to be able to stay in college and complete a degree. The funding for this grant has been increased, including for part-time students, thus of importance to community college students. There’s a website with information, www.getcollegefunds.org. The site hosts a “grant estimator” into which users can plug financial info and find out if they are likely to receive grant.

Campus Respect

In your opinion, do you see respect on campus? That is peer-to-peer, peer-to-professor, or professor-to-peer. How can we show respect to one and another? For example, how does one approach another that is not smoking in the designated smoking area with out coming off as a jerk, or disrespectful?
